I could not say I have a favorite show, but I will say that Sept-Dec 72' represents the GD at the peak of their powers. If you were to investigate their performances of the more jam oriented material you would find 42 extraordinary performances of the big 3,Dark Star,Playin' and the Other One,amongst those 7 all-time versions of those songs.
Dark Star-9/24
Playin'-10/9 11/15 11/18
Other One-9/15 9/28 12/10

Add to that 11 extraordinary Bird Songs and about 90 very good to extraordinary performances of the rest of the catalog in a 41 show span and you have a pretty fine output.During those four months I find Keith's playing to be at it's high point for his tenure with the band, and Jerry never had that psychedelic quality to his sound again.

thanks for your input jer. I agree with all of that. except for the fact that you left out 9/21 and 11-13's dark star and 9-3, 9-17's other one. As my grandpa would say "boy you out cho damn mine!". I like 12-10's other one, but i dont think its as good as either 9-3 or 9-17. As for playin's I can't say.

Couldn't agree more about Keith's work in the band during this time. With Pig's declining health I think he really felt the pressure to make his presence known.

What would you consider other standout dark stars?

Here are 6 that I consider all-time versions:

6/7/69
8/3/69-with guest saxophonist and violinist(not to everyone's liking)
5/18/72
7/18/72
3/28/73
12/6/73
